![]() ![]() It chronicles the rise of a legendary director and some other now very established filmmakers, as well as, shares tales of some sadly gone talents such as Lee Van Cleef, Issac Hayes, Donald Pleasence and pioneer producer Debra Hill. Add the commentary and some delightful stories from the photographer, Carpenter himself and others such as Adrienne Barbeau, DOP Dean Cundey and many, many more, and this book becomes a trip back in time to a long-gone era and a side of these productions that we have only barely glimpsed previously. Gottlieb-Walker was hired by Carpenter and Debra Hill as his unit photographer and as such, she captured some wonderful behind the scenes shots of cast and crew from these classic films. The photography is not only breathtaking but, captures a side of the productions of Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, the Carpenter produced Halloween II and Christine that we've never seen before. John Carpenter is perhaps my all time favorite filmmaker and, as my favorite of his works are those from the 70s and 80s, this book was an amazing trip down memory lane and an incredible glimpse behind the scenes at some of Carpenter's early classics as told through the talented camera lens of Kim Gottlieb-Walker with some comments and anecdotes from Kim, John Carpenter and some of those involved. ![]()

On a purely visual level, Monsters feels great to read. Those are the parts I will not spoil, as I believe they make up the core of the narrative. Most of the book is spent on flashbacks about Bobby’s youth, his life with his parents, and his childhood trauma. This is just the beginning of the story, though. ![]() ![]() He is fooled into joining a top-secret army project called the Prometheus Initiative, that sees him turn into a horrifying creature, a supposed super-soldier. Bobby seems to have no documentation, no friends and no close relatives. Bobby is a very quiet and visibly disturbed young man who has problems communicating with others. Monsters tells the story of Bobby Bailey, who joins the US Army in hopes to follow on the steps of his deceased father. This book is one of the best contemporary graphic novels I have read. You can imagine my joy when I was told Mr Windsor-Smith had finally finished Monsters, his twenty-years-in-the-making masterpiece that started as a rejected Hulk story. One of my favorite Marvel comics of all time is Barry Windsor-Smith’s Weapon X, a comic that tells the story of Wolverine’s origin in an interesting and creative way, avoiding many of the tropes that had plagued “origin story” superhero comics since their very conception. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I found myself stopping the e-audiobook to think and then hurriedly turning it back on to know what happened next.
